As part of Day 5 of the RAKSHARAMBH ’26 Orientation-cum-Induction Programme, Session II, titled “Choosing Cybersecurity: Building a Career in the Digital Age,” introduced students to the growing importance of cybersecurity in protecting individuals, organisations and nations from digital threats.
The session was led by Dr. Balamurugan G., Associate Professor (CSE), SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai. He discussed the significance of digital security in the modern technological environment and familiarised students with emerging cyber threats, including AI-driven attacks and malware. The session highlighted the need to understand evolving cyber risks and the importance of adopting appropriate security measures to protect digital systems and information.
Dr. Balamurugan also explained the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity, highlighting its potential to support threat identification and security-related activities. He emphasised that although AI can serve as a valuable tool, human effort, technical expertise and professional judgement remain essential for effective cybersecurity practices.
The session further explored career opportunities in cybersecurity, including ethical hacking and digital forensics. Students were introduced to the importance of developing technical skills in networking and coding to build a strong foundation for careers in the field. The discussion also helped them understand the relevance of continuous learning and skill development in responding to the changing demands of the digital security landscape.
The session provided students with valuable insights into cybersecurity as an emerging professional field. It enhanced their awareness of contemporary cyber threats, the role of AI in digital security and the technical skills required to pursue career opportunities in cybersecurity.
