Puducherry Prison visit - Academic Visit

Students from the 1st year of Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Criminology at RRU Puducherry Campus recently had the opportunity to embark on an insightful academic visit to the Puducherry Prison. This visit was a significant part of their curriculum, allowing them to gain real-world exposure to the workings of the criminal justice system.

The visit was facilitated by Mr. Baskaran, the Superintendent of Police, whose leadership and guidance ensured that the experience was informative and engaging for the students. As the head of the prison, Mr. Baskaran took the time to provide a thorough overview of the facility's functions, including the rehabilitation programs for inmates, security protocols, and the roles played by correctional officers in maintaining order and promoting inmate welfare.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to interact with various prison staff members and learn about the challenges they face while managing incarcerated individuals. They were given a detailed tour of different prison sections, including the living quarters, the vocational training areas, and the rehabilitation sections. The experience gave students a unique perspective on the complex interplay between law enforcement, rehabilitation, and criminal justice.

The academic visit also provided valuable insights into the practical aspects of criminology, reinforcing theories learned in class about crime prevention, inmate rehabilitation, and the ethical considerations in dealing with offenders. Students could ask questions, engage in discussions, and reflect on how these real-world dynamics shaped their studies in criminology. Overall, the visit to Puducherry Prison was an enriching experience for the students, allowing them to connect classroom learning with real-world applications. It underscored the importance of understanding the criminal justice system's complexities and criminologists' role in promoting positive change within society.

RRU Puducherry Campus is committed to offering its criminology students hands-on experiences that bridge the gap between academic learning and real-life practices, and this visit was a testament to the university’s dedication to providing a well-rounded education.
