As part of Day 6 of the RAKSHARAMBH ’26 Orientation-cum-Induction Programme, held on 18 September 2026, Session II, titled “Social Work in Criminal Justice: Bridging Justice and Social Change,” focused on the relationship between social work, the criminal justice system and social transformation. The session highlighted the importance of social responsibility, community support and preventive approaches in addressing crime and supporting vulnerable individuals.
The session was led by Ms. Kalyananthy Sachithanantham, Social Activist, who discussed the influence of family, society and education in shaping individual behaviour and preventing involvement in criminal activities. She highlighted how a supportive family environment, access to education and social awareness can contribute to positive behavioural development and help reduce vulnerabilities that may lead individuals towards crime.
The discussion also explored the challenges faced by young people growing up in difficult and vulnerable circumstances. The resource person emphasised the importance of timely intervention, appropriate guidance and support systems in helping young people overcome challenges and make informed decisions. She also highlighted the role of social workers and community engagement in identifying vulnerabilities and supporting individuals who require assistance.
Furthermore, the session addressed the importance of legal integrity, fairness and accountability within the criminal justice system. Ms. Kalyananthy emphasised the need to ensure appropriate support for victims and discussed sexual abuse as a serious human rights concern. She highlighted the importance of addressing such issues without stigma, while respecting the dignity of victims and ensuring that they receive the necessary care, support and understanding.
The session provided students with valuable insights into the role of social work in crime prevention, victim support and the promotion of human rights. It reinforced the importance of compassion, ethical responsibility and fairness in dealing with vulnerable individuals and addressing social challenges. The discussion also helped students understand how social work and the criminal justice system can work together to promote justice, accountability and meaningful social change.
