On December 4, 2024, we resumed operations at the RRU Puducherry Campus. While the campus is now functional, minor issues such as water leakages, electrical disruptions, and structural damages still persist. Rest assured, our team is actively working to resolve these challenges and restore full normalcy to the campus environment.

From December 1 to 4, Cyclone Fengal formed in the Bay of Bengal, and Puducherry was placed on red alert for heavy rains. While initial predictions suggested that the cyclone would only have a moderate impact on the region, it ended up affecting Puducherry and its surrounding areas far more severely than expected. The heavy rains and winds brought significant disruptions, leading to widespread flooding, power outages, and damage to infrastructure. This unexpected intensity of the cyclone added to the challenges faced by the region during this period. In light of these events, it is important to recognize the remarkable efforts of our RRU Puducherry team and students, who rose to the occasion and showed incredible resilience in the face of adversity. Despite the difficult weather conditions, the unity and dedication of our community were nothing short of inspiring.
RRU Puducherry Task Force Initiatives In response to the floods and the intensified impact of Cyclone Fengal, we swiftly mobilized the RRU Puducherry Task Force, setting up a coordination center to streamline relief operations. The task force worked tirelessly to provide support to affected students, faculty, and staff, ensuring that they had access to food, shelter, and other essential supplies. Our on-ground relief efforts were a shining example of community solidarity. Students and staff members worked hand-in-hand to distribute food and supplies to those in the hardest-hit areas. Many students volunteered in rescue operations, assisted with the evacuation of families, and supported local NGOs in delivering vital aid to flood-affected communities.

Acts of Heroism and Dedication Several members of our RRU Puducherry community displayed extraordinary courage and selflessness during this crisis:
Hari Ganesh, a second-year student in the Bachelor’s Program, exhibited remarkable bravery by rescuing a family trapped in rising floodwaters. His actions were recognized by the Honorable Minister and covered by major news outlets. Siva Rama Krishnan, also a second-year student, contributed significantly by working with the Chief Minister’s relief teams. He assisted in food distribution, provided aid to stranded individuals, and helped with rescue operations in flood-affected areas. Theeran, a first-year student in the Bachelor’s Program, worked alongside an NGO to distribute food and essential supplies, providing much-needed support to the local communities.

Hostel Students Step Up In addition to these heroic individuals, over 30 hostel students stepped up to help. They packed food for more than 200 people, and teams of five student volunteers, guided by a faculty member, were deployed to distribute the meals directly to those in the flood-hit areas. Their commitment and selflessness exemplify the true spirit of RRU Puducherry. These extraordinary efforts reflect the resilience, unity, and compassion of our RRU Puducherry community. We are currently compiling a detailed report to ensure that all participants are properly recognized for their contributions. Their actions serve as a shining example of what it means to come together in times of crisis, and we are immensely proud of the positive impact they have made.
