On 22 November 2025, a group of 26 students from Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), Puducherry Campus participated in an intensive Rigging Training Session conducted by the 1(P) Naval Unit NCC at the scenic WST Area, Chunnambar Boat House, Puducherry. The training was designed to provide students with practical seamanship skills, enhance their understanding of naval discipline, and expose them to the fundamentals of safe sailing operations.
The session began with a detailed safety and procedural briefing by the ANOs/CTOs. Students were introduced to essential watercraft safety protocols, the nomenclature and functions of various parts of the DK Whaler and EC Dinghy, and the importance of accurate rigging to ensure operational safety while sailing.
The hands-on segment of the training centered on the rigging and un-rigging procedures for both the DK Whaler and EC Dinghy, giving students an in-depth understanding of practical seamanship. Participants were guided through the process of raising and securing the mast, followed by the correct fitting and fastening of lug sails and sprit sails to ensure smooth and safe sailing operations. They also practiced a range of essential maritime knots, including the reef knot, clove hitch, and round turn with two half hitches, each vital for securing rigging lines and maintaining stability on the water. This comprehensive, skill-based approach allowed students to grasp the precision and discipline required in naval rigging.
Working under experienced instructors, RRU students actively engaged in assembling, tightening, and inspecting each element of the boats, gaining confidence and competence in fundamental seamanship tasks.
This training not only strengthened their technical abilities but also instilled values of teamwork, discipline, and precision, reflecting the true spirit of NCC naval training. The event concluded successfully, with students appreciating the rare opportunity for real-time nautical learning in a professional maritime environment.
Such initiatives continue to enrich the practical exposure of RRU students, preparing them for future roles in security, defense, and maritime studies.
