Understanding risks before they turn into real threats is one of the most important aspects of modern security management. Keeping this objective in mind, an expert session on “Threat Assessment and Risk Audit” was conducted by Mr. John Paul Manickam on 2nd May 2026 for students of Security & Corporate Intelligence and Cyber Security & Digital Forensics. The session provided students with practical exposure to risk assessment methodologies and encouraged a proactive approach toward security management.
Mr. John Paul Manickam began the session by explaining that risk assessment is not merely a formal procedure or compliance requirement, but a proactive process that helps organizations anticipate and prevent potential security issues. He emphasized the importance of asking critical questions such as “What can go wrong?” and “How severe could the consequences be?” in order to identify and manage risks effectively.
A major focus of the session was understanding the relationship between threats, vulnerabilities, and risks. Students learned how vulnerabilities within systems, infrastructure, or processes can be exploited by threats, leading to security risks. The speaker also explained the concepts of likelihood and impact, helping students understand how risks are prioritized based on probability and severity.

One of the key highlights of the session was the introduction of the 3×3 Risk Matrix, a practical and widely used tool for categorizing and evaluating risks. Through this framework, students gained clarity on how organizations assess risk levels and decide appropriate preventive measures. The session also covered the five-step risk assessment process, including risk identification, vulnerability assessment, risk measurement, implementation of controls, and documentation. This structured approach helped students understand how risk assessment is applied systematically in professional environments.

The interactive discussion and practical examples shared during the session made the concepts easier to understand and relate to real-world situations. Students actively participated, clarified their doubts, and gained valuable insights into industry-oriented security practices.
Overall, the session proved to be highly informative and impactful. It strengthened students’ conceptual understanding of threat and risk assessment while also enhancing their analytical thinking and practical readiness. The session successfully encouraged students to adopt a proactive and systematic mindset toward identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks in professional security environments.
