15-Day Internship Programme on Crime Scene Investigation and Evidence Analysis

Rashtriya Raksha University, Puducherry Campus, organized a 15-day internship programme on Crime Scene Investigation and Evidence Analysis from 13 July 2026 to 27 July 2026 at the campus Forensic Lab. The internship provided an excellent opportunity to bridge classroom learning with practical forensic investigations through laboratory sessions, crime scene simulations, and expert demonstrations. The successful execution of the Internship programme was made possible through the visionary leadership and continuous guidance of Ms. Shilpa A, TCRO (Forensic Science). A total of 7 students participated in the programme, creating an excellent platform for collaborative learning and knowledge exchange. 

Objectives of the Internship:

• To provide practical exposure to crime scene investigation.
• To develop competency in forensic evidence collection and preservation.
• To familiarize participants with forensic laboratory practices.
• To enhance practical skills in biological, chemical and toxicological evidence examination.
• To promote scientific documentation and ethical laboratory practices.

The 15-Day Internship Programme commenced with an inaugural session and an introduction to forensic science and its applications in criminal investigations. Participants were introduced to the principles of crime scene investigation, evidence recognition, documentation, and preservation. A mock crime scene was demonstrated to familiarize the interns with systematic crime scene processing, observation techniques, and the importance of maintaining the chain of custody. The session provided a strong foundation in crime scene management and evidence handling. 

Day-wise activity:

• Day 1: Learned the fundamentals of forensic science, crime scene investigation, and evidence management.
• Day 2: Studied fingerprint patterns and practiced latent fingerprint development techniques.
• Day 3: Learned forensic anthropology, skeletal identification, and basic serological analysis.
• Day 4: Gained practical experience in advanced fingerprint detection and visualization methods.
• Day 5: Examined biological samples, including blood smears and epithelial cells, using microscopy.
• Day 6: Performed presumptive tests for blood and saliva and observed the phenolphthalein test.
• Day 7: Studied the microscopic characteristics and forensic significance of hair evidence.
• Day 8: First Half: Poison Examination – Resource Person: Mr. Buvanesan K, M.Sc., Tutor (Forensic Science). Participants gained practical knowledge on examination and handling of poisonous substances and toxicological evidence. Learned forensic chemistry techniques, including urine analysis and food adulteration tests.
• Day 9: Visited the Forensic Science Laboratory and observed the functioning of various forensic divisions.
• Day 10: Learned the principles of forensic toxicology and poison evidence examination.
• Day 11: Performed preliminary colour tests for poison detection and toxicological screening.
• Day 12: Studied diatom examination and density gradient techniques used in forensic investigations.
• Day 13: Learned scientific documentation, case analysis, and laboratory safety procedures.
• Day 14: Revised forensic laboratory techniques and strengthened practical analytical skills.
• Day 15: Summarized the internship experience and received valuable guidance during the valedictory session.

After the completion of the programme, students received the participant certificates. The internship successfully bridged theoretical knowledge with practical forensic applications through demonstrations, laboratory exercises, case studies, and crime scene simulations. Participants developed essential competencies in crime scene investigation, evidence examination, and laboratory practices, thereby strengthening their readiness for higher studies and careers in forensic science. The 15-day internship at Rashtriya Raksha University was both educational and inspiring. Every session introduced new concepts, practical skills, and real investigative techniques that highlighted the importance of science in the criminal justice system.
