OSAC Women in Security (WIS) Meeting

The second OSAC Women in Security (WIS) Meeting, hosted at the Wells Fargo Embassy Zone in Chennai, was a significant milestone in advancing discussions around gender inclusivity and leadership in the security field. This event brought together an exceptional assembly of women security professionals, industry experts, and representatives from the U.S. Consulate, including Regional Security Officer Scott Schonauer and Spokesperson Samantha Jackson. The presence of Gentry Smith, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security, further enriched the gathering with his profound insights on the evolving dynamics of the security sector and the critical role of women in shaping its future.

Addressing Key Challenges in the Security Sector

The meeting served as a platform to delve into the unique challenges women face in the security profession. Persistent societal stereotypes continue to position security as a male-dominated field, creating hurdles for women seeking leadership roles. Participants highlighted the underrepresentation of women in decision-making positions, the scarcity of female role models, and the difficulty of accessing professional networks traditionally dominated by men. Moreover, the high-pressure nature of security roles, coupled with gender-based biases, often leads to mental health challenges for women. These barriers underscore the importance of creating an environment that fosters inclusivity, mentorship, and equal opportunities for professional growth.

Among the diverse and esteemed attendees, students and faculty from Rashtriya Raksha University’s (RRU) Puducherry Campus made their impactful presence known as active participants, adding their voices to the enriching discussions.
