Exploring Cyber Security Practices through an Internship at Prompt Infotech, Coimbatore

Students from the Postgraduate Diploma in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics undertook an Internship at Prompt Infotech, Coimbatore, from December 15 to December 31, 2025. The primary focus was on developing a strong foundation in computer networking and cybersecurity. The training began with an in-depth introduction to core networking concepts, including the fundamentals of computer networks, IP addressing (IP classes, ranges, private and public IPs), subnetting techniques, gateways, and network communication principles. Special emphasis was placed on wireless router configuration, which was practically demonstrated using Cisco Packet Tracer, enabling a clear understanding of network design and traffic flow.

The programme also introduced virtualization concepts, various types of servers, web servers, and different hosting environments. Practical sessions played a crucial role in strengthening technical understanding, where we gained hands-on experience in installing and hosting WordPress websites and file servers using VirtualBox. Additionally, exposure to Kali Linux and Windows environments helped in understanding operating systems, creating basic web pages, and setting up servers, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation.

In the advanced phase of the internship, the focus shifted towards real-world cybersecurity practices. This phase encompassed critical aspects, including information gathering, scanning, vulnerability assessment, Google Dorking, bug identification, and professional bug reporting techniques. We utilized multiple tools and methodologies for reconnaissance across various websites, operating systems, social platforms, and email-based targets, followed by a detailed analysis of vulnerabilities.

The programme concluded with an introduction to bug bounty concepts and an overview of common web vulnerabilities, including Clickjacking and Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) in its reflected, stored, and DOM-based forms. These sessions provided insight into how real-world security professionals identify, analyze, and responsibly report vulnerabilities.

Overall, the internship at Prompt Infotech offered valuable practical exposure, significantly enhanced my technical and analytical skills, and improved my preparedness to address real-world cybersecurity challenges. The hands-on approach and industry-oriented training made the internship a highly enriching learning experience.
