The NSS Unit of Rashtriya Raksha University, Puducherry Campus successfully conducted a "7-day Village Adoption Camp at Nallavadu Coastal Village from 25th March to 31st March 2026", with the objective of promoting community development, environmental awareness, and social responsibility. Nallavadu, a coastal village near Puducherry, faces challenges related to sanitation, waste management, and healthcare awareness. Through this camp, around 50 NSS volunteers actively engaged in addressing these issues through structured fieldwork and community interaction.
Day 1: The camp commenced with an inauguration session, followed by a large-scale cleanliness drive at the community hall, temple, and Primary Health Center. Over the next few days, volunteers continued sanitation activities, including removing plastic waste, clearing shrubs, and improving public spaces through whitewashing and maintenance.
Day 2: Cleaning and Environmental awareness: The day was dedicated to community cleaning and environmental awareness activities to improve hygiene and promote social responsibility among the villagers. A special session on “Good Touch and Bad Touch” was also delivered to school children, promoting personal safety and awareness. The camp also included coastal awareness initiatives that highlighted the importance of marine ecosystems and turtle conservation. Volunteers actively participated in coastal clean-up drives, collecting waste and promoting environmental responsibility.
Day 3: Tree Planting: Our team began the day by bringing plant saplings and engaging in a tree-planting initiative across several important community locations. We planted saplings at the Primary Healthcare Center, the Murugan Temple, and a Government School. Volunteers carried out tree plantation drives, distributed saplings to schools, and conducted awareness sessions for students on cleanliness and waste segregation.
Day 5: Focusing on a critical safety concern in the village: poorly visible speed breakers—locals reported several accidents due to a lack of proper markings. Understanding the urgency, our team took immediate action and painted seven speed breakers, ensuring they are clearly visible to motorists. This small yet meaningful intervention has the potential to prevent accidents and save lives.
Day 6: Dental Camp: The camp aimed to promote oral health awareness and provide basic dental check-ups for local residents. A medical team of 3 doctors and 5 nurses conducted the camp, with Dr. Kavipriya, Dr. Shilpa Reddy, and Dr. Suganthi offering consultations and treatment. Around 40 villagers benefited from the camp, receiving examinations, oral hygiene guidance, and dental health advice.
Day 7: Blood Donation Camp: The camp was successfully conducted with the support of 11 doctors, ensuring safety and smooth organization. Students from Hotel Management College (10) and RRU College (9), along with 2 civilians, actively donated blood. A total of 21 units of blood were collected, marking a significant achievement. The well-maintained and hygienic setup ensured a safe environment for all. The successful blood donation camp made the NSS Special Camp memorable and highlighted the participants’ unity, commitment, and dedication to serving society.
On April 1st, 2026, the NSS Special Camp concluded with a valedictory function, followed by cultural activities. The event marked the successful completion of the camp and celebrated the active participation and contributions of all volunteers.
Throughout the camp, volunteers demonstrated strong values of discipline, teamwork, and dedication, often working beyond regular hours, including late-night field activities such as painting speed breakers to improve road safety. This village adoption initiative not only improved Nallavadu but also provided volunteers with a transformative learning experience. It strengthened their sense of social responsibility and reinforced the true spirit of NSS — “Not Me, But You.”
