Crime Mapping and Hands-on Experience with QGIS

Rashtriya Raksha University, Puducherry Campus, conducted a Special Lecture and Hands-on Training Programme on “Crime Mapping and Hands-on Experience with QGIS” on 01 June 2026 for students of Criminology. The session was facilitated by Mr. Adarsh Krishnan, Research Scholar, Department of Criminology, University of Madras, who introduced participants to the growing significance of geospatial technologies in crime analysis and prevention.

The programme focused on the fundamentals of crime mapping and its role in understanding crime patterns, identifying hotspots, and supporting evidence-based policing. Through an engaging combination of theoretical discussions and practical demonstrations, students were introduced to the collection, organization, and interpretation of spatial crime data. The session highlighted how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be effectively utilized to analyze crime trends and support informed decision-making in law enforcement and criminological research.

A key feature of the programme was the hands-on training using QGIS, an open-source geospatial software widely used for mapping and spatial analysis. Students gained practical experience in visualizing crime-related data, creating digital maps, and identifying crime-prone areas through geospatial techniques. The interactive exercises enabled participants to understand the real-world applications of GIS in crime prevention, public safety planning, and criminological investigations.

The session successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application by equipping students with valuable technical skills relevant to modern criminology. By exposing participants to innovative analytical tools and data-driven approaches, the programme enhanced their understanding of contemporary crime analysis methods and prepared them for future research and professional opportunities in the field.
